Avenal Activists
On April 28, 2026, the recall election was held in the City of Avenal. On May 28, 2026, it was certified with nearly 80% of voters in Avenal voting out 4 members of the City Council.
Pursuant to Government Code 36503.5, since April 28, 2026, the Councilmembers subject to the recall have not been authorized to expend or participate in any activity that would expend public funds. Pursuant to Elections Code 11382, on May 28, 2026, when the election was certificated, the recalled Councilmembers should have immediately left office.
Residents and Taxpayers have petitioned the court for a writ of mandamus, for a 526(a) civil restraining order, declarative relief, and injunctive relief to prevent the recalled Councilmembers from continuing to spend tax dollars unlawfully.
Plaintiffs have also filed a Quo Warranto application with the Attorney General’s office to force the removal of the recalled Councilmembers.
The Avenal community has been advocating for environmental justice and speaking out about the Avenal Landfills impact on the community. Avenal leaders have joined communities from across the state fighting for increased regulations and resources to communities impacted by man made environmental disasters. Community leaders have traveled to Sacramento to advocate for better protections for communities facing dangerous landfill conditions.
Their efforts have supported CARB updating its methane rules and Assemblywoman Schiavos’ landfill bills. The Landfill Fire Safety Act (AB 28) passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The Landfill Data Transparency Act (AB 2674), will move forward to the Committee this month.
